Mencius was a man of Kingdom Zhou during the Warring States Period. His father died when he was three years old, so his mother brought him up. She was very virtuous and instilled the importance of education in Mencius. At first, his home was near a graveyard. So he often imitated the funeral ceremony and also built tombs. His mother thought this was not good, so she moved the house to a market. Since there were many businessmen, Mencius was unknowingly influenced by what he saw and learned to do business quickly. Again, his mother was very disappointed and moved their house once again near a school east of the city. Now, Mencius began to read books under the influence of the surrounding. She was happy and said, "This is the place my son can live in."
